Setelah Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Samsung berencana segera memboyong Galaxy Note dan Galaxy Nexus ke Indonesia. Galaxy Note rencananya launching di Indonesia pada bulan November dan Galaxy Nexus sekitar Desember.

Indonesia menjadi pasar penting bagi Samsung. Ini diperlihatkan Samsung dengan memilih Indonesia menjadi yang pertama memasarkan Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus setelah diluncurkan perdana di Korea Selatan 30 September silam. Bukan tanpa alasan, ini mengingat kepemimpinan tablet Samsung di Indonesia.

Sementara Galaxy Note dan Galaxy Nexus seperti diketahui telah mencuri perhatian publik sejak diperkenalkan, termasuk pecinta gadget di Indonesia. Maka tidak mungkin jika Samsung tidak memanfaatkan situasi ini dan segera mendaratkannya ke Tanah Air.

Galaxy Note memiliki bentang layar paling besar di antara smartphone lain, yaitu 5,3 inch dengan teknologi Super Amoled HD resolusi 1280×800. Dapur pacunya akan ditenagai prosesor dual core 1,5 GHz. Smartphone ini mengandalkan OS Android Gingerbread, kamera 8MP, kemampuan rekam video HD dan dilengkapi kehadiran stylus bernama S Pen.

Sedangkan Galaxy Nexus yang sangat ditunggu-tunggu, berukuran layar 4,65 berteknologi Super AMOLED. Smartphone ini menggunakan prosesor Cortex A9 1,2 GHz dual-core dengan chipset TI OMAP 4460, RAM 1 GB, serta kapasitas penyimpanan mencapai 32 GB. Selain itu, Galaxy Nexus juga akan memiliki fitur NFC (Near Field Communication).

The Android Market may not have as many apps as the iPhone App Store yet, but there are still enough to be overwhelmed, and it’s growing at a breakneck pace. To help you sort through them all, here’s my list of the best apps I’ve found on Android. Again, remember that this is a snapshot in time. The Android platform is developing so quickly right now that I guarantee my home screen look different a month from now.

Here’s my top 20 apps list:

1. Google Voice

Google Voice is a service that is so useful I consider it one of the top benefits of Android itself, especially since Apple rejected the Google Voice app for the iPhone. It gives you a phone number that can ring to multiple places or devices and it allows you to access all of your voicemail and text messages over the Web. The Android app integrates even deeper. It can make outgoing calls look like they’re coming from your Google Voice number so that you can keep your real mobile number private.

2. Advanced Task Killer

One of the realities of having a multitasking mobile OS in Android is that you have to manage your apps so that they don’t hurt performance or battery life. Advanced Task Killer (or ATK) is my favorite. It even comes with a widget that you can tap once to kill all open apps.

3. Dropbox

Dropbox is a great cloud service that automatically syncs a folder of files between multiple computers (Windows, Mac, or Linux). This app extends Dropbox to Android and interacts with other apps (such as Documents To Go) to open the files.

4. Facebook for Android

If you’re like most people, you spend more time on Facebook than any other website on the Internet. If you’d like to be able to keep track of all of your friends on your phone, the Facebook for Android app is a must. You can even sync your Facebook contacts with your phone.

5. Documents To Go

The free version of Documents To Go offers a great little reader for Word and Excel files. You can upgrade to the full version (for $15) if you want to edit files and add PowerPoint files to the mix. If you do want editing capability, I’d also recommend taking a look at QuickOffice.

6. LiveProfile

This is a messenger app, if the blackberry had a blackberry messenger to communicate between blackberry device, using LiveProfile you can communicate into android, blackberry, and iphone device. After registration you’ll be get an unique PIN same as blackberry messenger, and you can share it to your friends and colleagues.

7. Plume

Twitter is an amazing instant-intelligence engine and it was made for mobile browsing. Although there’s an official Twitter app for Android now, Plume is still the best Android Twitter client.

8. FCC Speedtest

I’m obsessed with running speed tests to check my bandwidth in various places, both to see 3G fluctuations and to check the quality of Wi-Fi. There are a number of really good speedtest apps, but my new favorite is the FCC Test app.

9. Astro File Manager

Another one of the great things about Android (if you’re a geek or a tinkerer) is that you have lower-level access to the system itself. Astro is an app that lets you navigate the Android file system.

10. Got To Do

There are plenty of to-do apps to choose from on Android but I prefer Got To Do because of the solid interface and the fact that it can sync with the online service Toodledo.

11. Gist

Many of us have contact lists scattered across various computers, devices, and online services. Gist is a Web service that can bring them together and even pull in stuff from the Web to help you stay up to date with your most important contacts. There’s an Android app as well as an iPhone app.

12. Snapbucket

Did you know Instagram? Photo sharing app for iPhone, in ANdroid you can find the same thing as instagram that called snapbucket. You can share every photos you captured into your photobucket account and tell it to everyone via twitter and facebook.

13. Pandora

Pandora is a streaming “radio station” for the Internet age. You simply search by an artist or song and it will create a running playlist based on that one piece of information. It intersperses an occasional ad between songs but the ads tend to be fairly localized and occasionally even useful.

14. Shazam

If you want to impress your friends with a mobile app, show them Shazam. Ever hear a song being played at a store or on the radio and ask yourself, “Oh, what song is that?” That’s where Shazam comes in. Just hit the button and let it listen for 15 seconds, query its database, and then return the name of artist and the song. It has about an 80% success rate.

15. Google Goggles

This is a fun app that is a little but ahead of its time. It does visual searches. You can take pictures of things and then the app tries to tell you what they are. It’s limited in its scope but it is pretty cool, and it’s definitely a peek into the future. One of the coolest features is the ability to take pictures of text in a foreign language and let that app translate for you. In a foreign country, this can help you read street signs and avoid going into the wrong bathroom.

16. Google Sky Map

Ever look up at the night sky and try to tell your kids the name of that constellation you’re pointing at, or try to remember which planet that is in the southern sky? Google SkyMap lets you point your smartphone at it and get the information. This is part of a new breed of apps called “Augmented Reality” apps that layer digital information on top of real world experiences.

17. Vignette

Honestly, the camera software on Android is an area where major improvements are needed, but this app is a great example of what’s possible. It has full customization options and offers some great effects for photos.

18. Photoshop Mobile

Photoshop is, of course, the best known photo editor in the world and its mobile app doesn’t do anything to hurt that reputation. But while the desktop version is know for having a zillion features, the mobile app is distinguished by its simplicity. It’s the best Android (and iPhone) photo editing app for simple crops, brightness adjustments, and sharpens, for example.

19. Bump

Bump is a fun (and useful) idea for sharing info between two phones using the accelerometer, and it works across Android and iPhone. You can use it to share contact info (yours and others), photos, and apps. You both simply open the Bump app, choose what you to share, and then hold the phones in your hands and bump your hands together.

20. Barcode Scanner

This app turns the Android camera into a barcode scanner. You simply scan a product’s UPC code and let the app go to work to find it in Google Product Search or a search on the open Web. You’ll be amazed at how fast it works. This is great for when you’re shopping retail and you want to check the price of a product online before buying to make sure you’re paying a fair price.

Place that I spend 60% of my day..

Bicara mimpi dan harapan, penulis cukup logis berharap para pemuda Indonesia bisa mengguncang dunia sebagaimana bunyi janji Soekarno di awal tulisan ini. Melalui perjuangan gerilya BlankOnan Indonesia, selanjutnya ASEAN dan dunia. Bersemangatlah seperti Soekarno yang menampilkan kepemimpinan Indonesia lewat momentum Konferensi Asia Afrika. Bersakit-sakit dahulu seperti Jenderal Soedirman yang berjuang dari atas tandu.
Tak berlebihan bila penulis memunculkan asa BlankOn akan mendunia. Kenapa tidak? Potensi penduduk Indonesia yang mencapai 250-an juta adalah fakta jumlah tak terbantahkan. Asumsikan saja sepertiganya BlankOnan, maka akan ada 70-an juta komputer bersistem operasi buatan Indonesia yang menyapa dunia. Jumlah sebanyak itu akan bikin vendor hardware ngiler dan memaksa mereka mendukung ketersediaan fitur ‘pasang & pakai’ agar diterima di sistem operasi BlankOn. Cukup adil bukan?

Ada beberapa ikhtiar yang bisa diperjuangkan bersama agar BlankOn bisa jadi pilihan utama sistem operasi komputer di Indonesia dan dunia. Pertama menjadi pengguna, ini tingkatan paling mudah dan bisa dimulai sekarang juga. Kedua, setelah mapan jadi pengguna, jadilah penganjur BlankOn ke keluarga dan kerabat terdekat Anda. Adakan sosialisasi lewat arisan dan atau pelatihan kecil-kecilan.

Ketiga, menjadi donatur, sisihkan rejeki Anda untuk ongkos R&D BlankOn supaya kian sempurna. Boleh juga Anda mengupah lelah para pengembang yang bekerja sukarela. Pada aksi advokasi terkecil, silakan jualan menawarkan kaos dan aneka suvenir BlankOn. Bila kurang ide, bisa jadikan judul tulisan ini sebagai pesan inspiratifnya. Keenam, bagi yang Muslim, Anda bisa jadi pengguna sekaligus pendakwah BlankOn Sajadah. Gelar pengajian ‘Syukuran Kelahiran’ BlankOn dan para ulama bisa turun fatwa penggunaannya. Ketujuh, bagi pebisnis di bidang TI, Anda pun bisa turun aksi. Nah, jika mereka bisa, mestinya BlankOn yang lebih berasa Indonesia layak berharap juga. Coba kita mulai dengan target ajakan ’1 pekan 1 BlankOnan’, sudah lumayan bukan?

20 Mei yang bertepatan dengan peringatan Kebangkitan Nasional cocok kita gelari aksi permulaan kebangkitan piranti lunak Indonesia melalui kampanye BlankOnan. Jika lagu ‘Udin Sedunia’ bisa mondial dengan lirik lucunya, maka tak perlu malu bergerak mengikuti langgam suksesnya.

Android - PHP - MySQL Scheme

We will use JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format. JSON is a lightweight text-based open standard designed for human-readable data interchange.

How json will be used in our application.
- When android application will execute, it will connect android device to PHP Script.
- PHP Script will fetch data from the database. It will encode it into json format and send it to the device.
- Now, android application will get these encoded data. It will parse the data and display it on android device.

Here is the implementation detail.
In MySQL create database FOOD. In database create table FOOD. This table consists of two columns. First is FOOD_ID, which is auto_increment and primary_key and having data type INT. Second column is FOOD_NAME, which has data type VARCHAR(20).

We want to retrieve food name from our table FOOD that starts with A.
The PHP code will be very simple:
- Connect to the database
- Run an SQL query, with a WHERE block depending on data from POST/GET values
- Output it in JSON format

For example we will have this functionality in food.php:

Modern Laptop

It is a little hard to determine what was the first portable or laptop computer, the first portable computers did not look like the book-sized and folding laptops that we are familiar with today, however, they were both portable and lapable, and lead to the development of notebook style laptops. I have outlined several potential firsts below and how each qualifies, many of the off-site links provide good photos of the computers that will let you see the progression in design.

The Grid Compass

Designed in 1979 by a Briton, William Moggridge, for Grid Systems Corporation, the Grid Compass was one fifth the weight of any model equivalent in performance and was used by NASA on the space shuttle program in the early 1980′s. A 340K byte bubble memory lap-top computer with die-cast magnesium case and folding electroluminescent graphics display screen.

Gavilan Computer As The First Laptop?

Manny Fernandez had the idea for a well-designed laptop for executives who were starting to use computer. Fernandez, who started Gavilan Computer, promoted his machines as the first “laptop” computers in May 1983. Many historians consider the Gavilan as the first fully functional laptop computer.

The First Laptop Computer – Osborne 1

Osborne 1

The computer considered by most historians to be the first true portable computer was the Osborne 1. Adam Osborne, an ex-book publisher founded Osborne Computer and produced the Osborne 1 in 1981, a portable computer that weighed 24 pounds and cost $1795. The Osborne 1 came with a five-inch screen, modem port, two 5 1/4 floppy drives, a large collection of bundled software programs, and a battery pack. Epson HX-20

Also released in 1981, was the Epson HX-20, a battery powered portable computer, with a 20-character by 4 line LCD display and a built-in printer.

In January of 1982, Microsoft’s Kazuhiko Nishi and Bill Gates begin discussions on designing a portable computer, based on using a new liquid crystal display or LCD screen. Kazuhiko Nishi later showed the prototype to Radio Shack who agree to manufacture the computer. 

In 1983, Radio Shack released the TRS-80 Model 100, a 4 lb. battery operated portable computer with a flat and more of a laptop design.

IBM 5155

In February 1984, IBM announced the IBM 5155 Portable Personal Computer.

TRS-80 Model 200

Three years later in 1986, Radio Shack released the improved and smaller TRS Model 200.

Compaq SLT/286

In 1988, Compaq Computer introduces its first laptop PC with VGA graphics – the Compaq SLT/286.

NEC UltraLite

In 1989, NEC UltraLite was released, considered by some to be the first “notebook style” computer. It was a laptop size computer which weighed under 5 lbs.

Apple Powerbook 170

In September 1989, Apple Computer released the first Macintosh Portable that later evolved into the Powerbook. 

Zenith MinisPort

In 1989, Zenith Data Systems released the Zenith MinisPort, a 6-pound laptop computer. 

In October 1989, Compaq Computer released its first notebook PC, the Compaq LTE.

In March 1991, Microsoft released the Microsoft BallPoint Mouse that used both mouse and trackball technology in a pointing device designed for laptop computers.

In October 1992, IBM released its ThinkPad 700 laptop computer.

In 1993, the first PDAs or Personal Digital Assistants are released. PDAs are pen-based hand-held computers.

The Universal Automatic Computer or UNIVAC was a computer milestone achieved by Dr. Presper Eckert and Dr. John Mauchly, the team that invented the ENIAC computer.

John Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, after leaving the academic environment of The Moore School of Engineering to start their own computer business, found their first client was the United States Census Bureau. The Bureau needed a new computer to deal with the exploding U.S. population (the beginning of the famous baby boom). In April 1946, a $300,000 deposit was given to Eckert and Mauchly for the research into a new computer called the UNIVAC.

UNIVAC Computer

The research for the project proceeded badly, and it was not until 1948 that the actual design and contract was finalized. The Census Bureau’s ceiling for the project was $400,000. J Presper Eckert and John Mauchly were prepared to absorb any overrun in costs in hopes of recouping from future service contracts, but the economics of the situation brought the inventors to the edge of bankruptcy.

In 1950, Eckert and Mauchly were bailed out of financial trouble by Remington Rand Inc. (manufacturers of electric razors), and the “Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation” became the “Univac Division of Remington Rand.” Remington Rand’s lawyers unsuccessfully tried to re-negotiate the government contract for additional money. Under threat of legal action, however, Remington Rand had no choice but to complete the UNIVAC at the original price.

On March 31, 1951, the Census Bureau accepted delivery of the first UNIVAC computer. The final cost of constructing the first UNIVAC was close to one million dollars. Forty-six UNIVAC computers were built for both government and business uses. Remington Rand became the first American manufacturers of a commercial computer system. Their first non-government contract was for General Electric’s Appliance Park facility in Louisville, Kentucky, who used the UNIVAC computer for a payroll application.

UNIVAC Specs

The UNIVAC had an add time of 120 microseconds, multiply time of 1,800 microseconds and a divide time of 3,600 microseconds.

Input consisted of magnetic tape with a speed of 12,800 characters per second with a read-in speed of 100 inches per second, records at 20 characters per inch, records at 50 characters per inch, card to tape converter 240 cards per minute, 80 column punched card input 120 characters per inch, and punched paper tape to magnetic tape converter 200 characters a second.

Output media/speed was magnetic tape/12,800 characters per second, uniprinter/10-11 characters per second, high speed printer/600 lines per minute, tape to card converter/120 cards per minute, Rad Lab buffer storage/Hg 3,500 microsecond, or 60 words per minute.

Competion with IBM

John Presper Eckert and John Mauchly’s UNIVAC was a direct competitor with IBM’s computing equipment for the business market. The speed with which UNIVAC’s magnetic tape could input data was faster than IBM’s punch card technology, but it was not until the presidential election of 1952 that the public accepted the UNIVAC’s abilities.

In a publicity stunt, the UNIVAC computer was used to predict the results of the Eisenhower-Stevenson presidential race. The computer had correctly predicted that Eisenhower would win, but the news media decided to blackout the computer’s prediction and declared that the UNIVAC had been stumped. When the truth was revealed, it was considered amazing that a computer could do what political forecasters could not, and the UNIVAC quickly became a household name. The original UNIVAC now sits in the Smithsonian Institution.
